During the FOURTH WEEK OF APRIL we listen to the heard of the world and hold the Sisters of St. Joseph and the people of ENGLAND in our prayer. This week we hold in prayer the Sisters of St. Joseph and Associates ministering in England, and the people of that country. Twenty-one Sisters and 12 Associates from the Congregations of Annecy, Lyon and the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart minister in England. Their mission includes: Anti-trafficking, Teaching, Parish and Pastoral Work, Prison Work, University, Work with the Homeless, Asylum Seekers, Seafarers Chaplaincy. During the month of May the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy will be holding their General Chapter in Italy.
This week we pray for the Sisters of St. Joseph and Associates ministering in Denmark, and for the people of that country. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry have 41 Sisters and 21 Associates in Denmark. Although the original community is aging there has been a renewal with a number of women from Vietnam seeking formation. The community has been engaged in education, pastoral work, retreat work, and hospitality to university students.
In the April 11, 2019 budget, you announced a 30% reduction in Legal Aid Ontario’s (LAO) budget and indicated the government will no longer fund refugee and immigration law services “outside of any potential transition costs.” The Sisters of St. Joseph Federation Office of Systemic Justice expressed its concerns on this matter. This week we pray for the Sisters of St. Joseph serving in the Czech Republic and for the people of that country. There are 5 Sisters serving there from the Chambéry and Lyon congregations. Their ministry includes: home and institutional nursing with Caritas, and education.
To celebrate International Women's Day, Liija Eskola, wrote a reflection on lessons learned from her mom. Liija wrote this article for a display where she works for Kelly Santini in Ottawa. This article is filled with cherished memories. Enjoy.
This week we pray for the Sisters of St. Joseph ministering in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and for the people of that country. 128 Sisters missioned by the Chambery and Cuneo Congregations, as well as the Instituto San Giuseppe are involved in education, dispensaries, AIDS programs, orphanages, catechesis especially for victims of violence, agriculture, youth, work with widows and single mothers, pastoral and parish work, retreat work, hospitality to university students, empowerment of women, schools for the deaf and handicapped persons. Since last year’s info was shared I have learned that our Sault Ste Marie congregation had one member minister in DRC. Sr. Frederica Lalonde taught secondary school from 1970 to 1972.
