Music has been a vital part of CSJ life from the beginning. Though many might automatically think “church music” when thinking of music ministry, our Sisters have been involved in much more than playing
or singing at Mass. Certainly, enhancing liturgical celebrations with good music has been and continues to be very important. We have a number of Sisters currently involved in this ministry throughout the Congregation.
However, we have also had Sisters involved in Music Education as well as the Performing Arts. Music education has included vocal, instrumental and theory, and ranges from leading choirs to teaching piano to developing new methodologies in music. Sister musicians who have performed include both vocal and orchestral involvement.
In the months ahead, we will feature some of the Sisters – past and present – who have enhanced the lives of many through music ministry.
Sister Mary Sammon, csj has extensive experience teaching music in North Bay, Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. She received her ARCT in piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music as a high school student.
